New Blog Post: Coping with Fibromyalgia
Acupuncture is safe, effective, and free of many side effects common to conventional medicine. It can provide help in many cases where western medicine has little to offer. So why aren't more people using it? In my experience, there is usually one of three reasons most people aren't receiving acupuncture. The number one reason is they think the needles will hurt. Acupuncture needles are thin and flexible and should not be thought of as similar to hypodermic needles used for injections. See my first blog entry for more about this. Most people find treatment to be a profoundly relaxing experience and “needle phobia” is usually overcome after the first treatment.
The second reason is that people are unaware if acupuncture can help their condition. There is a wide variety of complaints that acupuncture can treat. The World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health have found acupuncture to be effective for:
This is far from a complete list. Trials are ongoing and many studies from all over the world have demonstrated acupuncture’s effectiveness. Bear in mind that the Chinese have used acupuncture for over 2,000 years. In light of this fact, many western treatments could be seen as experimental by comparison.
The third reason people aren’t receiving acupuncture is they don’t think they can afford it. They might be surprised to learn that they could be receiving treatment for low and sometimes no cost through community outreach and something known as Community Acupuncture. This is when treatments are performed while still clothed, seated in a lounge chair, often with other patients in the room. This allows an acupuncturist to see more patients in an hour, thus lowering the cost for the patient. Community treatments are available at Adams Avenue Integrative Health and free events are put on in various communities by Alternative Healing Network. My goal is to provide patients with information and resources so they can make informed decisions regarding their health care. Chinese medicine has been the most used and trusted health care on the planet. In the United States, however, Chinese medicine is greatly underutilized. Given its proven benefits, safety, and potentially low cost, we should see greater numbers of people turning to this medicine. If you would like to discuss if Chinese medicine is right for you, please call me for a free consultation.
Be Well!
